3rd T20I 2017: England vs South Africa
The match is scheduled on June 25, 2017 (14:30 local | 13:30 GMT | 18:30 PKT)
England: EJG Morgan*, JM Bairstow, SW Billings, JC Buttler†, MS Crane, TK Curran, LA Dawson, AD Hales, CJ Jordan, LS Livingstone, DJ Malan, C Overton, LE Plunkett, JJ Roy, DJ Willey, MA Wood
South Africa: AB de Villiers*, F Behardien, RR Hendricks, Imran Tahir, DA Miller, M Morkel, CH Morris, M Mosehle, WD Parnell, D Paterson, AL Phehlukwayo, D Pretorius, T Shamsi, JT Smuts
Dawid Malan could replace Jonny Bairstow at the top of England’s batting order as the latter was only available for the first couple of games. This might be the only change in the team’s lineup for this match.
Eoin Morgan is the only batsman in the side to have played a T20 international at the Sophia Gardens. In the three matches here, the skipper has scored 38*, 18* and 74 which makes him the one to watch out for. Alex Hales seems to be in good form and the onus will be on him to provide a blazing start to the innings. David Willey had notched up a couple of wickets when England last played a T20 at this ground against Australia in 2015. The fast bowler is going to be a key figure in the team’s bowling attack.
England’s performance in T20 cricket of late has been good if not great. The newly adopted aggressive approach by their batsmen seems to be working out quite well for the team. The hosts have won more number of T20 internationals than they have lost over the last two years.
AB de Villiers, who already has had a good outing in this series, averages 53.50 at this ground in the 50-overs format. The South African skipper can be extremely destructive once set which is why his wicket will be wanted desperately by England. Chris Morris with his hard-hitting abilities will be crucial down the order. Since conditions are expected to be ideal for seam bowling, South Africa will back Andile Phehlukwayo to inflict some early damage on the English batting lineup.
While South Africa have been very impressive in this format at home, they need to improve their T20 record away from home. Bowling looks to be the team’s strongest department at the moment while their batting has been a bit off colour in the past few matches.
South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl.
England won by 19 runs.
Player of the match: DJ Malan (England)
Series: England won the 3-match series 2-1.
