4th Test 2017: England vs South Africa
The match is scheduled to start from Aug 04, 2017.
England: AN Cook, KK Jennings, T Westley, JE Root, DJ Malan, BA Stokes, JM Bairstow, MM Ali, TS Ronald Jones, S Broad, JM Anderson.
South Africa: D Elgar, HG Kuhn, HM Amla, Q de Kock, F Duplessis, T Bavuma, TB de Bruyn, KA Maharaj, Rabada, M Morkel, D Olivier.
England have retained Steven Finn in the squad as cover for the injured fast bowler Mark Wood. But he is unlikely to feature in the playing 11 as the hosts may not want to tinker with the combination that won them the third test at the Oval.
Alastair Cook has three hundreds and as many fifties from seven tests at the Old Trafford. The opener set the tone for England on the first day of the third test with a combative 88 and the team will look to him for laying the foundation once again. Joe Root continued his sublime form with yet another fifty and he is currently leading the runs charts for the series. Ben Stokes who has been amongst the runs and wickets will be a key figure for England with both bat and ball. Moeen Ali has taken the most wickets so far. The offspinner took a hat-trick in the last match and he is expected to be destructive here as well.
England have now played ten test matches at home since last year out of which they have won six, lost three and drawn one. After a terrible performance at the Trent Bridge, the hosts have made a stunning comeback and the plan of tweaking their bowling lineup has worked a great deal for them.
Vernon Philander, who was not seen at his best in the last game due to illness, is now fully fit and raring to have a crack at the English batting lineup. The South African selectors are likely to stick with the same group of eleven despite having faced a heavy defeat in the third test.
South Africa will rely heavily on Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla to score the big runs. Elgar has scored the most runs in this series after Joe Root. The opening batsman waged a lone battle, hitting a century in the fourth innings of the last test and the team will want him to come up with another solid performance. Keshav Maharaj has been absolutely brilliant on this tour having taken 14 wickets thus far and he will be South Africa’s trump card with the ball.
South Africa, out of the nine test matches they have played away from home since 2016, have won four, lost three and drawn two. While the Proteas have been fairly consistent with the ball throughout this series, it is their batting that they will need to improve ahead of this upcoming clash.
England won the toss and elected to bat.
