Veteran captain Gautam Gambhir has not played since the resigning the captaincy, with Shreyas Iyer stepping up and impressing in his place. Iyer and the selectors must now decide whether to stick with the same bowling line-up that has performed well in the previous two games in Delhi, or shuffle their overseas players after taking some punishment at Pune against Chennai Super Kings. The free-scoring Super Kings took exactly 100 runs off Trent Boult and Liam Plunkett’s combined seven overs, which could lead to a return for either seamer Mohammed Shami or spinner Shahbaz Nadeem. Should that happen, it would open a space for either Jason Roy or Dan Christian to return and bolster the Delhi Daredevils batting. That said, Chennai have been in top form with the bat and any changes based on one defeat would be hasty.
Shreyas Iyer was in superb form in both of Delhi’s previous matches at the Kotla. He plundered 93 from 40 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders and then fired 57 in the following game. He has three half-centuries and 257 runs in total so far in this year’s IPL, but that only puts him second in the Delhi Daredevils’ run-scoring charts – Rishabh Plant took his tally for the season past the 300 mark when he hit 79 from 45 balls in the defeat to Chennai Super Kings. Australia’s Glenn Maxwell has made useful contributions with the ball, meanwhile, but is yet to turn out a big innings with the bat, while Trent Boult has taken 11 wickets from the first eight matches but was wicketless and expensive from his four overs against Chennai Super Kings.
Delhi Daredevils have won just two of their eight matches so far, losing by 13 runs to Chennai Super Kings last time out as they fell short in their pursuit of 211/4. Their most recent game at the Kotla saw them power to 219/4, inspired by Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant 93 not out, however, as they beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 55 runs. That win ended a run of three straight defeats, including a 71-run thrashing in the reverse fixture against Kolkata and a four-run loss on home soil to Kings XI Punjab.
Ish Sodhi made his first appearance of the 2018 Indian Premier League against Sunrisers Hyderabad as Rajasthan continue to rotate their overseas players. England duo Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler have been regulars, and Jofra Archer now looks to have locked down a bowling place, but in the absence of Steve Smith – dropped after Australia’s ball-tampering scandal – Rajasthan have lacked star quality in their other overseas slot. Sodhi’s inclusion meant Heinrich Klaasen dropped back out after just seven runs in two games. The reshuffle also meant a first start of the season for Rajasthan’s teenage all-rounder Mahipal Lomror.
Sanju Samson’s 40 in the defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad took him to 279 runs from his first seven innings, with his high score of 92 not out coming in one of Rajasthan’s three victories this season. Ajinkya Rahane was top scorer the last time Rajasthan faced Delhi Daredevils, and he was back in the runs in Jaipur last time out with 65 not out from 53 balls. Jofra Archer has played in the last two games for Rajasthan Royals and quickly cemented his place as a key bowler by taking six wickets – 3/22 against Mumbai Indians and 3/26 against the Sunrisers.
Rajasthan Royals were unable to make it back-to-back home wins when they suffered an 11-run defeat to Hyderabad last time out. Chasing 151/7, Ajinkya Rahane’s unbeaten 65 was not enough as they finished on 140/6. They beat Mumbai Indians in their previous match, inspired by Jofra Archer’s three wickets and Sanju Samson’s half-century. Their most recent away game, however, saw them crash to a 64-run defeat in Pune against the Chennai Super Kings, however.
Delhi Daredevils vs Rajasthan Royals Prediction:
Delhi Daredevils are out to end their losing streak against Rajasthan Royals, but with home advantage they can do exactly that. They need their big hitters to fire, and their bowlers to keep it tighter but they did exactly that at home to Kolkata Knight Riders and simply need to repeat that effort.
