Kings XI Punjab:

Chris Gayle returned from injury in the defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad last time out, with the big-hitting West Indian’s return seeing Aaron Finch drop down the order and David Miller miss out altogether. Yuvraj Singh paid the price for his poor performances, meanwhile, with Kings XI Punjab turning to Manoj Tiwary in his place against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He scored just one run and bowled only one over but may be given a second chance against Mumbai Indians. Aaron Finch has also failed to fire this season, and David Miller and Marcus Stoinis are waiting in the wings should Kings XI Punjab opt to drop another of their out-of-form big-name players.

Chris Gayle’s unbeaten century against Sunrisers Hyderabad proved his enduring class, as he smashed 104 runs from his 63-ball innings. His return from injury is timely, after his fitness issues coincided with the team’s strike rate dropping. Lokesh Rahul has been an excellent opening partner for Gayle, with 268 runs from his first seven innings, but Yuvraj is not the only Kings XI Punjab batsman to have failed to fire this season – Aaron Finch has managed just 24 runs in five innings, and they will be hoping the Australian power-hitter returns to his best form soon. With the ball, Ankit Rajpoot took a stunning 5/14 against Sunrisers Hyderabad last time out, to follow his economical 2/23 in the previous game. Andrew Tyre is their leading wicket-taker, meanwhile, with nine from the first seven games.

Defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad ended a four-match winning streak as Kings XI Punjab managed just 119 in response to Sunrisers’ 132/6. Ankit Rajpoot was still named man of the match for his 5/14 with the ball – his second man of the match award in a row, after his economical bowling helped Kings XI Punjab defend 143/8

Mumbai Indians:

Mumbai Indians have continued to rotate players in recent weeks as they look for their best XI after a poor start to the season. Kieron Pollard returned last time out in place of injured Evin Lewis, with Ishan Kishan opening the batting. Kishan was dismissed first ball, however, and JP Duminy – playing just his second game of this year’s competition – took 29 balls to score his 23 runs at number three. Lewis’ wrist injury may give Mumbai little chance but to repeat the trick, though Duminy’s expensive bowling and slow batting makes him a prime candidate for being dropped. Akila Dananjaya is among the other overseas options at Mumbai’s disposal, but he too was expensive in his only game this season.

Suryakumar Yadav has scored 283 runs so far in this year’s Indian Premier League to be comfortable his team’s most consistent batsman. He has nearly 100 runs more than Rohit Sharma, but the captain has also weighed in with two half-centuries, including a 52-ball 94 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Hardik Pandya impress with bat and ball in the last match, aside from expensive over, as his 3/28 with the ball was followed by 50 with the bat. He now has 11 wickets in this year’s tournament, the same as Mayank Markande.

Mumbai Indians have won just twice in this year’s Indian Premier League despite being defending champions, but four of their six defeats were at the death – losing by one wicket in the final over to both Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first two matches, before another last-ball defeat to Delhi Daredevils in the third game. While they lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore last time out, they had shown signs of recovery in their previous game when they beat in-form Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets.

Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians Prediction:

Mumbai Indians were in fine form last time these two teams faced each other in Indore. The league table does not lie, but Mumbai Indians have been just a few balls away from being right up the top for the second season running and this is a chance to start to put things right.
